The PDF is a really interesting look into Facebook's privacy breaches, and suggests some ways for preventing them.

"A possible solution to this problem could be a "privacy-by-proxy" system, a data-hiding scheme proposed by researchers at the University of Virginia.
These researchers have suggested that developers be given fake "placeholder" data instead of real user information. They state that 'this is possible because Facebook has control over the output of applications.
When the fake placeholder data is displayed by the application, Facebook can turn it back into the real information for the viewer to see it correctly. Users can be made anonymous with this scheme and third party developers never get to see user information.'"

Founders at Work book extracts

"It's the whole sausage and sausage factory problem: when you're outside and you only see the sausage coming out you think, `That's pretty tasty.' When you're on the inside and you know how it's made, it's terrifying. (...) It's never, `We set out this well-orchestrated plan, we're executing it, it's going exactly according to plan.'"

"I do not consider myself a religious person in the usual sense, but there is a religious aspect to some highs. The heightened sensitivity in all areas gives me a feeling of communion with my surroundings, both animate and inanimate. Sometimes a kind of existential perception of the absurd comes over me and I see with awful certainty the hypocrisies and posturing of myself and my fellow man. And at other times, there is a different sense of the absurd, a playful and whimsical awareness... .

I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, unavailable to us without such drugs. Such a remark applies not only to self-awareness and to intellectual pursuits, but also to perceptions of real people, a vastly enhanced sensitivity to facial expression, intonations, and choice of words which sometimes yields a rapport so close it's as if two people are reading each other's minds." - Carl Sagan
Ecstasy: Neurotoxicity and How It Can Be Reduced | Serendips Exchange

This is for all you lovely pill-heads out there ;D

From the page: "Pre- and Post-loading can be used to lessen the harmful effects of MDMA. Pre-loading is taking supplements before rolling to help counteract the neurotoxic effects of ecstasy. A common pre- load consists of 200mg of 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), up to 100mg of Vitamin B-6, up to 1000mg of Vitamin C, and 100mg of Magnesium. (3) Adding more serotonin to the system can counteract the mechanism through which MDMA damages nerve cells. 5-HTP is the direct precursor to serotonin, and can therefore combat the neurotoxicity of MDMA. Vitamin B-6 helps to convert 5-HTP into serotonin, thereby boosting its effect. Because MDMA is thought to be neurotoxic due to oxidized free radicals, the consumption of the anti-oxidant Vitamin C can also reduce the harmful effects of MDMA. Magnesium is used as a muscle relaxer to minimize involuntary jaw-clenching associated with ecstasy use. A post-load consists of the same supplements except that magnesium is unnecessary. (4) It is also beneficial to drink water during and after the use of ecstasy. "

From the page: "A brain imaging technology called Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) was used to ascertain what happened in the brain during spiritual experiences (1). This enabled imaging of the brain, to determine which areas are active, by measuring blood flow to the areas of the brain (3). Higher the blood flow to an area, higher the brain and neural activity observed for that area (3). Firstly, a baseline scan of the subject's brain during rest was taken (3). This was compared with the brain scan taken when the subject indicated he/she was at the 'climax' of her spiritual experience (3).

The frontal lobes of the brain, which are associated with attention, showed increased activity (1).This was expected since greater concentration and focus was essential to meditation and prayer. However, what was most interesting was the decreased activity observed in the posterior superior parietal lobe (1).This area of the brain is affiliated with the Orientation Association Area (OAA), which is the part of the brain, which significantly influences our orientation of time and space (1)."
